Public and private sector representatives of each of the State's twelve regions advise the State in the development and implementation of regionally significant community and economic development initiatives. Each region has a 21 member Regional Advisory Council to provide a forum for communication between the regions and state government. The Board of DCA appoints seven members, the Board of DEcD appoints seven members, and the Commissioners of DEcD and DCA jointly appoint seven members. In the metropolitan Atlanta region, the Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC) appoints seven members and the Council serves as the Economic Development Committee of the ARC. The Councils charge from the state includes efforts to:

  • Coordinate strategic economic development planning with comprehensive land use, environmental, housing, and transportation planning;
  • Maximize the effectiveness of development resources through the collaboration and advice of local private and public sector leaders.
  • Establish a structure to promote public and private sector partnerships at the regional level in order to identify and respond to development issues and opportunities facing each of Georgia's diverse economic regions.
  • Seek local and regional input to develop customized regional economic development strategies.
  • Advise state agencies on methods to address the development needs and growth concerns of business and local governments, and to enhance opportunities to grow established businesses and to attract new business development.
  • Identify opportunities to create regional solutions for natural resource management and other development issues.
  • Assist in the development of regional leadership programs, workforce development strategies, downtown revitalization, rural development initiatives, and existing industry support programs.

Council members were initially appointed for one-year terms in July of 1998. Beginning in July of 1999, members were asked to serve staggered one- and two-year terms.

Regional Priorities
The summaries which follow represent regional economic development priorities as identified by the Regional Advisory Councils (RACs) during the past year and the regional agendas, or work programs, as developed by the 16 Regional Development Centers (RDCs) over the past several years, in accordance with the Georgia Planning Act. The complete RAC strategies and RDC regional comprehensive plans contain specific action items and implementation strategies, and in some cases, target area goals and objectives, which are not contained in the summaries provided here. These planning efforts will provide a regional perspective to help guide the State's development strategy.
