- Region 9 lies southeast of
the center of the state.
- The major cities in the region
are Vidalia (Toombs County) in the central portion of the region,
Eastman (Dodge County) in the western portion, Swainsboro (Emanuel
County) and Dublin (Laurens County) in the northern portion, and
Jesup (Wayne County) to the southeast.
- Interstate
16 passes through the north side of the region moving west to
east.
- US Highway 1 runs through
the region north south, passing through Swainsboro and near Vidalia.
US Highway 341 (also US Highway 23) passes through Jesup as it
goes north east through the region, into Eastman. US Highway 441
(also 319) travels north through the center of the region, into
Dublin and then northwest. US Highway 280 heads into Vidalia across
the southern portion of the region.
- The region has many waterways
traversing it, among them are the Ohoopee, the Ogeechee and Canoochee
Rivers to the north, the Oconee and the Pendleton Rivers in the
middle, and the Ocmulgee River and Big and Little Satilla Rivers
in the southern part of the region. The largest waterway in the
region is the mighty Altamaha River, the 2nd largest undammed
river east of the Mississippi.
- Some of the State Parks in
the region include the George L. Smith State Park (Emanuel County)
located in the northeastern portion of the region, the Little
Ocmulgee State Park (Wheeler County) and the Gordonia Alatamaha
State Park (Tattnall County).
