• The region lies in the northwestern corner of the state, bordered by Alabama to the west and the Tennessee-North Carolina border to the north.
  • The major cities in the region include Rome (Floyd County), Cartersville (Bartow County), and Cedartown (Polk County) in the south, and Calhoun (GordonCounty), Dalton (Whitfield County), and LaFayette (Walker County) in the north.
  • Interstate 75 runs north through the region, heading into Chattanooga. A portion of Interstate 59 cuts through the northwestern corner of the region, connecting with Interstate 24 at the state line.
  • US Highway 27 traverses the region from north to south along the western state line. US Highway 278 runs east west in the southern part of the region, while US Highway 411 enters the region from the north and turns west at Cartersville. US Highway 41 passes through Cartersville and then moves north through Dalton and into Tennessee. US Highway 515, the Appalachian Development Highway runs through the eastern part of the region from metro Atlanta to the mountains.
  • The region has many rivers, among them are: the Ellijay and Toccoa in the east; the Conasauga, Coosawattee, Etowah and Oostanaula Rivers in the central area; and the Chattooga, Coosa and Tallapoosa in the western portion of the region.
  • The State Parks in this region are the Red Top Mountain State Park, Cloudland Canyon State Park, James H. "Sloppy" Floyd State Park and Fort Mountain State Park. Other areas of interest are the Zahnd Natural Area, the Vann House, Pickett's Mill Battlefield, Chickamauga National Military Park and the Etowah Indian Mounds. There is a significant portion of the Chattahoochee National Forest in the northern part of the region.
