The majority of the population spends up to 90% of their day indoors,
and yet, indoor air quality (IAQ) receives only a fraction of the attention
paid to outdoor air quality. With the introduction of a plethora of
new building and furnishing materials, each with its own concoction
of volatile organic compounds, and the ongoing movement to make buildings
more energy efficient we are experiencing an ever-decreasing quality
of the air we are breathing indoors. The Georgia Indoor Air Coalition
(GIAC) was formed in order to coordinate indoor air quality activities
and share information. It has a diverse and knowledgeable membership
pulling from government, private, academic and nonprofit sectors.
Goals of the GIAC:
- To educate Georgia residents about indoor air quality issues and
motivate them to take action
- To pool the resources of the various organizations and agencies working
with indoor air quality issues.
- To reduce indoor air pollutants and subsequently improve peoples'
health The GIAC currently has two active task forces, the Schools subgroup
focuses on indoor air quality in schools and the Residential subgroup
focuses on home construction.
