Georgia*State AmeriCorps programs

The Georgia Commission for Service and Volunteerism grows partnerships across the state using the resources and civic engagement of national service programming and volunteerism to solve community problems and improve lives.

GCSV currently funds 18 AmeriCorps programs in Georgia that will enroll 660 AmeriCorps members. The GCSV funds 12 Learn and Serve programs that will engage more than 15,000 Georgia school students in service-learning activities and manages a VISTA project that will place one VISTA member for each of Georgia’s 12 regions throughout the state, as well as one VISTA Team Leader at the GCSV office.

Bill to President

Washington D.C. – Seventy-five years to the day after President Roosevelt signed the Civilian Conservation Corps into law, the House of Representatives today sent President Obama a sweeping expansion of national service that will engage millions of Americans in meeting national needs and solving local problems through volunteer service.

The House voted 275-149 on March 31 to accept the Senate amendments to H.R. 1388, the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act. The Senate passed the bill March 26 in a 79-19 vote and renamed the legislation after Senator Kennedy, a longtime champion of national service. The House action sends the bill to President Obama, who has said he will sign the measure.
